Saint Maria Soledad Hospital, Bamenda

A referral centre for maternal, neonatal and emergency care in Cameroon’s North-West Region.

Overview
OUR HISTORY

Founded through the missionary vocation of the Servants of Mary, Saint Maria Soledad Hospital was established to respond to the urgent need for maternal and child healthcare in Bamenda.

What began as a small initiative rooted in service to the sick has grown into a vital referral centre for mothers, newborns, and vulnerable families in the North-West Region of Cameroon.

Over the years, the hospital has expanded its clinical services, strengthened professional staffing, and increased its capacity to respond to emergencies — while remaining faithful to its founding commitment: to care for the most vulnerable with dignity.

Today the hospital continues its mission under the leadership of Sister Carmen Rodríguez Villar and the community of Servants of Mary sisters, together with a dedicated team of Cameroonian healthcare professionals serving mothers, newborns and vulnerable families in Bamenda.

Crisis
OPERATING IN A CRISIS CONTEXT

Located in the capital of Cameroon’s North-West Region, Saint Maria Soledad Hospital has remained operational throughout the Anglophone crisis, despite prolonged insecurity and severe disruption to healthcare access.

While many facilities were forced to close due to violence and lockdowns, the hospital continued functioning at full capacity — managing routine maternal and neonatal care alongside conflict-related trauma cases.

During this period, the hospital received operational support from Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). MSF teams provided maternal, paediatric, trauma, and surgical care within the facility and operated a 24/7 ambulance service to transport patients in urgent need.

As documented in the Médecins Sans Frontières’ report, “A hospital at the heart of the North-West crisis”, this collaboration significantly expanded emergency capacity and ensured continued access to care for vulnerable communities affected by the conflict.

Through resilience, disciplined management, and coordination with regional health actors, the hospital remains a crucial referral centre for mothers, newborns, and vulnerable populations in the North-West Region.

REFERRAL & SYSTEM ROLE

The hospital functions as a referral centre within the regional health system, receiving complicated cases from district facilities and coordinating ambulance referrals.

Its capacity to stabilise patients and provide secondary-level care contributes directly to reducing preventable maternal and neonatal mortality in the region.
